If the captcha test on the registration fails to pass you do get a 'Go Back and try again' message. If the captcha box is empty it returns to the registration page with a new captcha code.
If the captcha is correct but the registration name, password, email is blank you end up with a blank user that needs no password to log in.

A message is always returned, please ensure you have the correct language file selected in your administration (or /config.php file) and that this is present in /langs/.

I'm having the same problem, and Don is right. No message is returned because 'captcha_wrong' is not a variable in any language file, which is the error that is occurring. Only 'error_goback', the "go back button" he mentioned is returned. This happens on registration of new users with all fields seemingly correctly filled out, and the captcha image appearing as normal. So right now, I have v4.1.2 installed and can't get any users. Every other function (post, comment, admin) is working without issue.
Please advise.

I should answer this, since I don't see any posts from Egg in over a year.
This was my fault as a novice web builder, but may be worth mentioning in future documentation. I had to augment the php.ini file on my webhost to allow php sessions, which the registration function requires. I did this by looking up "php.ini sessions" in my webhost's help documentation. I hope this helps other web novices setting up eggblogs.
