A quick update on the coming of eggBlog 4, due for release shortly ...

A what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) text editor has been integrated with the administration of eggBlog4 (due for public release shortly).

FCKeditor has been selected for several reasons, mainly due to its dedicated support and development .. and of course, its open source:

  • Internet Explorer 5.5+ and Gecko browser (Mozilla / Firefox / Netscape)compatibility
  • XHTML 1.0 support
  • Cut, Paste and Past as Plain Text, Undo and Redo
  • Image insertion, with upload and server browsing support
  • Table creation and editing (add, delete rows, etc) - one of the best systems in the market.Spell checker
  • Multi-language support
  • Automatic browser detection and customization
  • Integration with PHP/eggBlog and Javascript

Even stripped down however, it is proving to be a very large addition to the package in terms of file size. The inclusion of FCKeditor increaes the package filesize six times (.zip package from 63k to 424k)!

Anyone who has the desire to create a replacement WYSIWYG javascript plug-in is welcome to submit their work!
